  • Two-day event to be live streamed plus national and international TV coverage with highlights show

We are extremely pleased to be partnering with P1 to stage the inaugural St. Petersburg Powerboat Grand Prix. The pier and entire downtown waterfront promises to be a great venue and backdrop for the race weekend which we look forward to building as a signature event for our community. Spectators will be able to cheer on the Visit St. Pete/Clearwater custom designed powerboat and personal watercraft rider Tory Snyder on his VSPC-branded jet ski.

World class marine motorsport will bring color and high-speed action to downtown St. Petersburg on Labor Day Weekend when international promoter Powerboat P1 stages a double bill of powerboat and personal watercraft racing. The two-day (September 4/5), free to watch event has attracted offshore powerboat teams and jet ski riders from across the United States, with Visit St. Pete/Clearwater as the presenting sponsor.

Discussions for the event, which is part of the eight-venue APBA national championship and also features both professional and amateur P1 AquaX racing, began in 2015 and earlier this year Powerboat P1 partnered with extreme sports legend Travis Pastrana and Nitro Circus for an invitational powerboat racing challenge in St. Pete featuring famous names from the worlds of motorsport and entertainment. “We are excited to bring a weekend of exhilarating sport and entertainment to the city with a packed schedule of racing in front of the superb, new pier,” commented P1 USA Championship Manager Michelle Petro. “We are expecting around 40 powerboats and 55 AquaX riders, and the action will be live streamed on our P1 Offshore Facebook page and Powerboat P1 YouTube channel. Our race events are designed to showcase the host venue and a one-hour highlights show will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network and Bally Sports Regional Networks as well as internationally in more than 100 countries.”

The Miss GEICO boat, a 47-foot Victory catamaran that can reach speeds of up to 160mph, will attract considerable attention as always. Sharing the cockpit with the experienced Brit Lilly from Maryland will be multiple world champion Steve Curtis, who describes St. Petersburg as “a fantastic city that’s easy to access for race teams and, because of its location, has the potential to be the greatest powerboat racing venue internationally.” He added: “Over my 35-year career I’ve had the opportunity to work with dozens of drivers and Brit is one of the very best. We’ve already made four appearances on the winner’s podium this season and we’ll be aiming for a fifth on Labor Day weekend.”

Racers will start arriving from Thursday and on Friday evening Matthew Wayne, a Florida-grown country band will be playing in Vinoy Park from 7.00pm. The evening will be sponsored by A-Game Beverages, a series partner for the P1 Offshore race season.

The pits for the race boats will be at Vinoy Park with the AquaX pits at Spa Beach and they will be open to the public from 5.00pm to 10.00pm on Friday and between 5.00pm and 8.00pm on Saturday.
