There were 52 boats entered for Michigan City, IN this weekend, an increase on the 47 boats entered in the same classes at St Clair, MI the week before. P1 AquaX raced on the Saturday, finishing their last heat on Sunday Morning. Saturday was testing and practice day for the race boats and the main action took place in 4 races on Sunday afternoon.
The first race included the Mod V, 600 and 700 classes. Boatfloater.com #2 were the favourite to win as they had won every race they started this season, but Punisher #22 came in first, and Pit Viper # 66 pushed Boatfloater.com into third place. Trinidadian team, Sheriff Lobo #D700 came in fourth. Young guns Nick Imprescia and Ian Morgan, both 20 years old and racing the 32-foot Phantom Visit St Pete Clearwater / 151 Express #727 for the first time, sadly failed to finish due to technical problems.
In the 600 Class, the rum must have worked as Rum Runners #601 were in front for the whole race, and are well ahead in the points due to winning most races in 2021, and also due to the fact that they are one of only 4 boats that have raced and finished at every single OPA event this season. They were followed home by Deception #651, ST Racing #626 and Punchin' Hulls #616. The live feed indicated Punchin' Hulls had third place, but ST took the position in the official results.
The second race of the day featured the always-competitive and popular Super Stock class. A turnout of eight boats was expected from the race entries but sadly LPC #S-27 never made it to the start due to technical problems. Team Allen Lawncare #S-17 pulled out just before the start. The boat had overturned during the St Clair race and this may have been a contributory factor in the technical failure that caused them to drop out. This left 6 boats to battle it out. The first lap was a bit of a free for all, but CMR #S-54's Eric Belisle and Shaun Torrente took a much wider tack around the last buoy to return along the shoreside leg which enabled them to keep their speed high during this turn and get a better advantage from the wind. This 'running wide' tactic helped them defend their lead for the remaining laps, even after other boats started following suit. The boats finished in the following order:

It was the turn of Stock V, Classes 300, 400 and 500 in the third of the day's races. The Stock V race was one of the best watches of the day (and you can still enjoy the whole of Sunday's action on the buttons below).The top four boats battled it out right from the start to the finish, with the lead changing regularly as they raced to the strength of their boats. LSB / RevX Oil #V-1 started well but was soon duking it out with Wazzup #3 and Relentless #47. With every lap, one boat seemed to be reeling in the others , You Gun Learn #26 driven by Dante Napoli, and with Mikey Bocchino on the throttles, appeared faster and more consistent than the other three, particularly on the straights. It finished as follows:

Class 300 was a solo run by Team Woody #327 in one of their three boats at Michigan City. #327 was crewed by Micheal Stancombe and with JJ Turk on the throttles. Class 400 was a three-boat race, won by Old School #421, with Predator #444 in second (although #444 appeared to cross the line first). GNS Motorsports #467 came third.
Class 500 had six starters and there was a lot of jostling for position but Team Woody #527 soon had a presentable lead leaving #Mean Streak #555, Bulletproof Glendale #517 and Shoreline Plumbing #509 scrabbling for second place. The points went to Shoreline Plumbing #509, with newcomer Mean Streak #555 in third and Bulletproof Glendale in fourth. May Marine #514 came in fifth. Reindl Powerboats #502 didn't make it to the start.
Class 1, Super Cat, Factory / Stock 450R, VX and 200 all competed in the ultimate race of the day. Taylor Schism and Johnny Tomlinson make their beautiful MTI boat look more impressive in every outing and took the Factory Stock / 450R title in fine style. Ed and Anthony Smith brought Knucklehead Racing #20 to another peerless win and the final Team Woody boat of the day #227 reprised their efforts in the 200 class.
Miss GEICO #113 came in first in Class 1, driven by Brit Lilly on his third outing of the day. (Brit also drove Pit VIper #66 AND LSB / RevX Oil #V-1!) . As usual, Miss GEICO was throttled by another 'Brit' who makes winning look effortless, Chris Curtis MBE. In second for most of the race, was Lucas Oil #66 with Jay Johnson driving and another Brit Nigel Hook on the throttles. The unmistakable red Silverhook started to drop back towards the end of the race with mechanical problems and were passed by SV Offshore / Sweetwater #88 who took second.
Three Super Cat boats charged around the course; M CON #06 have had the best of the results in 2021 so far, and Sunday was no exception, with first place. Second place was taken by WHM Motorsport #05. It might have been a different result if newcomers Chariots of Fire #4 hadn't had problems in the final lap and dropped behind.
An exciting day, great weather and thankfully a clean safety sheet as we thank Michigan City and start heading South...
